2800+ Mile Road Trip: Day 5-6
First and foremost, The Hallows Church website is up and going! Check it out: http://hallowschurch.org/
On the road again...we headed out yesterday morning from St. Louis toward Kansas City. The plan originally was to go to Des Moines but when we found out I-29 had reopened (closed for 4 months due to flooding) we changed our route. This kind of stressed me out since I had made an itinerary with our routes ahead of time. Nerd alert! But changing the plans was for the best. It saved us a hotel stay and time off our trip. Our brother-in-law's parents, J & J Austin, were nice enough to allow us to stay at their house in Topeka, KS even though they are on vacation in Spokane WA.
Topeka did not offer to much excitement. We ate at a Schlotzsky's and picked up a few things at Wal-Mart. I have learned after driving through 8 states thus far that no matter where you are in the continental U.S. all small towns have the same places.... Wal-Mart, Maurices, Dollar General, Sonic, FastCash and a Diary Queen. I do have to say that traveling in October has allowed us to experience Fall at it's finest. The leaves on the trees are changing which dresses up the view alongside the interstate. Also in Topeka there was a nice park that we did visit. Leighton swung on a swing for the first time.
We left Topeka the next morning and headed north toward Omaha, NE singing along with Justin Moore to Small Town USA. We drove through Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota in one day. They all looked the same. Corn fields and windmills. See below.
There were no interesting attractions to stop at along Hwy-75 N or I-29 N till we got to Sioux Falls, SD. Sioux Falls seemed like a nice little city and housed a pretty park. We enjoyed the view and ate some ice cream. Leighton was fascinated by the waterfall.
We then made the big turn left onto I-90 W. This road will take us all the way to Seattle. Along I-90 there are a few stops we are looking forward to. One of these was the Corn Palace. The only thing you can see from the interstate in SD besides farm land is billboards. For approximately 200 miles before reaching the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD we saw signs advertising the attraction. With all the hype the South Dakotans were putting on the Palace we were pumped....as you can see in Leighton and I's face below.
Corn Palace was a let down. Yes it is cool that it has been around since ~1900 (and it is free) but I was expecting a structure made of corn not a modern theatre/basketball gym with murals made of corn on the exterior. Leighton was disappointed as you can tell... but she did try on moccasins in honor of the Sioux Indians.
When we asked a lady at the Corn Palace for a "must eat restaurant in Mitchell" she directed us to a lounge/bar/casino eatery....mind you I am standing there with Leighton in the Bjourn. Needless to say we didn't take her suggestion. We found a place to eat and headed onto Chamberlain, SD to stay the night in a hotel. On our way....World's Largest Bull Head was claimed.
