Yummy Yummy for Her Tummy

As you all know from Six Months= Sweet Potatoes, Leighton has been eating solid foods since last month. We have been pureeing most of her food. Why not? Save money and you know what she is getting. We started out boiling the vegetables on the stove then using our regular blender to puree. But then our baby-food-making-world got flipped upside down when Katie (Wes' sister) got us the BEABA Babycook for Christmas! I highly recommend it for any parents wanting to make their own baby food. It is so easy to use and it steams and purees so you do not lose any vitamins. Katie also got us a cookbook, Top 100 Baby Purees, and storage containers to go with it. We have been using ice cube trays to freeze food as well. The portion size of an ice cube is great because sometimes we mix two different veggies (one cube each) and it allows us to not have to warm up more than Leighton will eat.
But let me tell you what I made that Leighton enjoyed most.... a banana blended with some organic plain yogurt. The next day we did blueberries with yogurt. She will not stop eating the smoothies! When she had bananas by themselves she did not like it but mixed with yogurt and she was in love. Is she going to have a sweet tooth like Mommy? She still prefers sweet potatoes, carrots, and squash over the green veggies like broccoli. So many more foods and combinations to try! Hoping to introduce Leighton to a lot of different flavors.

Other things we put in Leighton's food....
  • leftover breastmilk from bottle: if she does not finish it all with Wes during the day he adds it to her food...remember that stuff is like gold! Do. Not. Waste.
  • organic unsalted butter: fats for brain development???
  • whole wheat cereal: iron source (recommended for babies over 6 month still nursing)
  • liquid sunshine: Vit D supplements because she is breastfed, we live in Seattle, and I will be putting lots of sunscreen on her one day (she actually just takes the supplement straight)
Also, as I mentioned in an earlier post, Home Sweet Home, Leighton would not turn her sippy cup up to get water out. Well we have learned over the past couple of weeks that she prefers to drink out of straw so we got her a sippy cup with a straw... now she goes to town drinking her water!
Lastly if you notice in the picture above her "high chair", Chicco Caddy Hook-on, is actually a little seat that attaches to our table. It is the best option if you live in a small space like we do. We would not have room for a regular highchair. The bonus is Leighton enjoys being at the table with the rest of the family!

Happy New Year to all! (Leighton next to elephant for 7 month photo)
