Our Backyard
So we moved into our apartment 3 and ½ years ago. I cant
believe it. It is the longest Wes and I have ever lived somewhere in our almost
7 years of marriage by a landslide. It is the little apartment we have raised
our kids in and the only home they have known. Honestly, when we moved in in 2011 (HERE) I thought “this will do for us and a baby for now” not thinking we would
be here almost 4 years later. We are thankful for God providing the spot. We
haven’t left because of the location and rent price is better than we can find
elsewhere for the same space. Literally rent has increased ~$500 for any size place in the 4 years so if your place in 2011 was $1500 , now it would be at least $2000. Crazy market and almost renter abuse.
Anyway we have a small courtyard but it is better for our family than just a balcony. So where is our backyard? Where do the kids ride their bicycles, tricycles, and scooters? Where do we see grass? Our backyard is our neighborhood. Us and now 13,037 other people live in a 0.958 square mile radius (increased by ~3000 since 2011). It is one of the more densely populated neighborhoods in Seattle with the average in Seattle (7401 people per square mile). It is kind of different from the statistic I had for the first 18 years of my life… 4 people per 20 acres. We could walk outside in our PJs and no one could see us… now I walk out in my PJs in the courtyard for sure but also to get the mail/go to car and just don’t care that anyone can see me. We grill in courtyard, kids do sidewalk chalk, bubbles, playhouse, and Wes even has a small garden. But we can fill confined with 2 small kids and 2 adults in 900 sq feet of apartment. Soooooooooo as you have seen on numerous post….. we walk, stroll, ride, skip, cruise, stumble, and run up and down our street toward the heart of Fremont (36th street) and loop around restaurants, coffee shops, the library, novality shops, clothing stores, a grocery store, hair salons, a statue of Lennon, along the canal, to lake Union, and wherever else we can on sunny days or cloudy days. Since we have had more sunny days then cloudy lately and it is staying light till 10pm we are out and about most of the day. Here are some pictures of the girls in our backyard… not conventional but what has become our comfort.
Leighton's favorite climbing tree (located on Phinney Ave up from a chocolate factory beside an Asian Fusion restaurant. And how we let her dress herself to go to grocery store…Elsa!

A run to the library and back with a stop for snacks under Lennon.
Watching the bridge go up and down, boats and ducks go by and throwing rocks into the canal.
Courtyard fun with friends!
They painted our tree purple with sidewalk chalk paint :)
Sadie will want to walk when we leave then house then I end up carrying her on the way home. I give in every time because she is so sweet but it is causing back damage I know!
When we met friends to play we usually aren’t going to their
backyard. Either they don’t have one or they too want to get out of their space
so we are usually meeting at parks that are mostly in Fremont because it is close
to us and going to another neighborhood is so far! That was me being over
dramatic…. We do go to some neighboring ones. Here are some pics
