Where You Should Take Your Kids

Have you made the trips to the zoo and parks but wondering where else you can take your kids? Want to expose them to a different situation and brighten a lot of people's day? Stop by a nursing home! It doesn't matter if you have family there or know someone or not. You will easily get to know them and even if they don't remember you each time you come they will enjoy just watching and talking to you about your small children.

For the past 4 months our missional community has been volunteering at Columbia Lutheran Home. Last week we bowled with them and I think we will continue that activity as the residents loved the competition and knowing what to expect.  The girls had a great time too. One lady touched our family though. Her name is Ms Ann. She has only been in the home since Feb. She is not too old, her mind is great and is only in the nursing home due to Parkinsons and being bound to a wheelchair. She doesn't have family in Seattle to take care of her or visit. She is always happy and participates in all the activities but describes the place as depressing. I can understand why when majority of her roommates can not hear or remember you and she is able to leave on her own. So our family has made a few extra trips to visit and bring her KFC (Ms Ann requested any fast food). Ms Ann takes us around, showing off the girls as if they are her grandkids. All the elderly people there just love seeing the life that an almost 1 year old and 3 year old can bring to a room.
It was "wear what you want Sunday" and this is what Leighton chose for her  and Sadie so we took them to the nursing home in costume! Halloween in July.

So thats why I suggest stopping by a nursing home for an hour when you can with your kids. It may not be what you prefer to do with your hour but it will be worth it for you and to really brighten the day of someone else. It won't disappoint, I promise.
Above is me on Skype with my friend Anna in Zambia. She got up at 6am and I stayed up till 9pm… both of us tired but wanting to chat. She is working with WIPHAN so check out this ministry and what she is up to on her blog, HERE.
