Our 2nd Family Pet: A Gecko

As you know we lost Sawyer a couple of years ago.  Since then we have dog sat small dogs for Leighton and Levi off Rover. We are not in the head space to get another dog right now despite request from the kids. But we did offer to get Levi a gecko this month. Let me tell you the back story of how we ended up with “G-bo” Moore, the leopard gecko.

The first week in June, as a family we went on a hike in the Rocky River Reserve. During the hike, Levi caught a frog, put it in his pocket, and brought him home. He named the toad, Freddie, and created a habitat for him. Levi showed Freddie to the neighbor kids, checked on him every morning, and provided food for the toad. On the following Monday, Wes advised Levi to release the toad so he could live in the wild as he probably wouldn’t last long in our Tupperware. Levi understood and dug a hole in the back yard to release Freddie. See Levi thought Freddie would stay in this hole and live in our backyard. After he went back out side a couple hours later, Levi found out Freddie had hopped away. He was very sad. Wes found him laying in his bed with big tears.

Then later that day, Levi had his yearly  EEG. It was just a 2 hour EGG in the office where he slept for part of it. We were so thankful to hear from Dr. Moosa that the spikes height and frequency was considerably lower than his last several EEGs. He still has epilepsy and he is still taking Keppra but we are so thankful to see an improvement in the abnormal firing activity that is occurring in his little brain.

So the combination of the emotional release of Freddie and a good EEG, lead me to promise to let him get a pet gecko at the pet store. He has been taking great care of G-bo and the terrarium in his room.
